Persons Day Conference – Women’s Leadership Forum

Come celebrate, share and learn with women from all walks of life on this special day where women were declared ‘persons’ under the law. Bring your daughters, sisters, mothers, friends, significant others to have a conversation on the similarities and differences between and among women as leaders. The speakers and interactive sessions will focus on women’s leadership, our strengths and the challenges, including the intersections of race, class and gender and aim to be transformative calls for action to improve the lives of women locally and globally.
MC: Penny Priddy
Penny was born and raised in Ontario and lived and worked in Nova Scotia before moving to B.C.
Penny is originally a nurse by training. In her career outside public life, she has worked at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, served as executive director for the Nova Scotia Association for Community Living, and has been a faculty member. at BC’s Douglas College . She has also worked as an independent consultant providing evaluation, education and strategic planning for a wide variety of organizations.
Penny Priddy was elected Member of Parliament for Surrey North in 2006. After six successful elections and twenty two years of holding elected positions, she chose not to reoffer her name in the last federal election.
Penny has a long history of representing her community. She chaired the Surrey School Board, served as a City Councillor, and was the MLA for Surrey-Newton from 1991 to 2001. As an MLA, she held a number of cabinet portfolios in the BC NDP government — including Children and Families, Health, Education and Women’s Equality. She is the only woman in Canadian history to serve at all four orders of government. She served for seven years as the co-chair of the Women’s Campaign School.
In 2001, Penny received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Kwantlen University College for her service to the people of BC. Much of Penny’s unpaid work has been with children, youth and their families. Penny continues to be involved in the City of Surrey as a community activist.
Keynote Speaker: Shushma Datt
For the past 37 years, Shushma has been dedicated to encouraging inter-cultural harmony and cross-cultural understanding. Raised in Kenya, Shushma graduated from the University of New Delhi, India and moved to London, England working with the BBC, producing and hosting her own radio program for several years and was also a foreign correspondent for the Times of India.
In the years since arriving in BC, Shushma has been involved in virtually all the media that have incorporated a South Asian component. Shushma launched the world’s first 24-hour dedicated radio station for South Asians, outside of India and became the first woman in Canadian history to be awarded a CRTC radio license. Regarded as a media pioneer and a veteran, respected broadcaster, Shushma is also President and CEO of i.t. Media Broadcasting, Western Canada’s largest South Asian media organization.
She has received many awards and certificates of recognition, including the Order of British Columbia, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal, the Humanitarian Award from the Vancouver Multicultural Society, the YWCA’s “Woman of Distinction” Award.
Shushma has also served her community as a director for both VGH and Mount St. Joseph’s Hospitals. She is currently a sitting board member for the MS Society of Canada.
