On this rainy Saturday morning in Vancouver, 78 women gathered in the ballroom at Hycroft to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Persons’ Day.

Rose Point, elder from Musqueam First Nation, opened the day with a welcome to Musqueam territory. She asked us to unite and prepare to share the day with each other.

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

-this version is credited to Mother Teresa

A keynote address by Maureen Fitzgerald encouraged us to recognize and value our strengths as women. Delivered with humour, stories and a series of provocative questions, Maureen left participants with thoughts and activities to explore.

Following a break, Mary Collins, former MP and Cabinet Minister, hosted a panel discussion with three women in different stages of their political careers: Penny Priddy, retired from political office, the only woman in Canada to to be elected to school board, city council, a provincial legislature and the House of Commons; Suzanne Anton, Vancouver City Council and former park board commissioner; and Patti Bacchus, first time Vancouver school board trustee, elected by her colleagues to chair the board.

Generous donors provided gifts for a draw at the end of the session. We were fortunate to have two ‘grand prizes’.

a share in a food co-op donated by Deb Reynolds from Home Grow-In worth $250

a certificate for a ’speaker school’ from the Vancouver chapter of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers, worth $400

The Canadian Women Voters Congress welcomes 7 new members. We look forward to our next educational event.

Bernice Davidson appointed Honourary Member
The board of directors recently passed a motion that honourary membership be granted to Bernice Davidson in recognition of her support and devotion to the Canadian Women Voters Congress since its inception.

Bernice Davidson was among the founding members of the Canadian Women Voters Congress in 1998 in the office of Vice President. For many years her office provided a meeting place for the board as well as well as clerical support, a mailing address and database services for the Congress on a pro bono basis.

She served three terms as President and was invited to Yale University to be keynote speaker at their Women’s Campaign School in 2004. Her background in association management served the Congress well in two areas. During the year we left SFU to go to UBC there was a gap in university registration facilities and Bernice handled that process at home, earning $10,000 for the Congress that year. After her years on the board she knew that many documents are lost as they pass from one person to another, and made arrangements for a submission of Congress documents to Simon Fraser’s Archives in 2008.

Bernice Davidson joins a group of distinguished women currently holding honourary membership with the Congress: Audrey Paterson, Charlene Brisson, Penny Priddy, Linda Reid and Joanne Silver.
